Hi Reddit,

My name is Dr. Sarah E. (Moffitt) Myhre and I am postdoctoral scholar at the University of Washington. My research focuses on understanding the consequences of abrupt climate warming to marine ecosystems. And my name is Kate Davis and I am graduate researcher at the University of California, Davis. My research focuses on the use of microfossils in reconstructing past marine environments.

We recently published a paper titled “Paleoceanographic Insights on Recent Oxygen Minimum Zone Expansion: Lessons for Modern Oceanography” in PLOS ONE. Oxygen Minimum Zones are natural features in many ocean basins, where they have profound effects for marine life, which are currently expanding in response to changes in global climate. In this study, we looked at records of Oxygen Minimum Zone change during the last period of rapid climate change – the last deglaciation.

We’re here to talk about how oceans lose oxygen during events of global-scale climate warming and why this is really important to marine life. Past events of climate warming reveal that capacity of ocean systems to dramatically reorganize to states that have never existed in human history. Please ask us questions about climate change, oceanography and marine ecology!
