Science AMA Series: I’m an MIT computer scientist who develops wireless solutions to network congestion/spectrum crunch. AMA!

Hi! My name is Hariharan Rahul and I’m a visiting researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL).

I do research with professor Dina Katabi on networks and wireless technologies. We have designed and developed wireless systems that are 10x faster than existing systems - both Wi-Fi and cellular - by coordinating multiple transmitters at the same time, on the same frequency, without interference. We can do this without requiring any changes to end-user devices - laptops, tablets, cellphones etc. Most recently, our team developed a system called MegaMIMO 2.0 that works in real-time with off-the-shelf Wi-Fi devices. Here and here are some of our papers on the topic.

In the past, I have worked on on building other high throughput wireless systems, practical signal processing techniques for adaptive radios, and scalable content delivery systems for the Internet.

I got my PhD at MIT CSAIL and was previously at Akamai Technologies, where I helped design and implement their global traffic management system, as well as a highly reliable and available domain name service product. For more background on my work feel free to also check out my research page.

My favorite ice-cream flavor is Toscanini’s Khulfee, and when I’m not working on wireless systems, I usually like to be out hiking in the mountains. I’ll be online from about 1 to 3 pm EST. Feel free to ask me about wireless technologies, how I got into coding, what it’s like to be at MIT CSAIL, or anything else!
