Hi reddit!

In The Gene Machine, I explore how genetic advances have changed medicine, bioethics, and ultimately the factors that shape a family. In my research, I interviewed more than 150 physician-scientists, genetic counselors, bioethicists, parents and advocates who helped me get a handle on the promise and the pitfalls of having children in an age of constantly evolving genetic tests. Is DNA testing a triumph of modern medicine or a Pandora’s box of possibilities? Is screening for disease or disability in an embryo a humane form of family planning or a slippery slope toward eugenics? And, more practically, how do we navigate the dizzying and expanding array of tests available, with more appearing every day?

The Gene Machine has gotten a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly for taking a “calm, thorough, and nonsensationalist look” at this new world of making babies, a world that should be of interest to anyone who has a baby, had a baby — or once was a baby.

I'll be back at 4 pm EST to answer your questions. AMA!
