Hello Reddit! I am: Yaniv Erlich: Professor of computer science at Columbia University and the New York Genome Center, soon to be the Chief Science Officer (CSO) of MyHeritage.
My lab recently reported a new strategy to record data on DNA. We stored a whole operating system, a film, a computer virus, an Amazon gift, and more files on a drop of DNA. We showed that we can perfectly retrieved the information without a single error, copy the data for virtually unlimited times using simple enzymatic reactions, and reach an information density of 215Petabyte (that’s about 200,000 regular hard-drives) per 1 gram of DNA. In a different line of studies, we developed DNA.Land that enable you to contribute your personal genome data. If you don't have your data, I will soon start being the CSO of MyHeritage that offers such genetic tests.
I'll be back at 1:30 pm EST to answer your questions! Ask me anything!
