Hi Reddit! I am Eric Slater, Senior Manager of Copyright, Permissions, and Licensing for the American Chemical Society. My office is part of the Office of the Secretary and General Counsel at ACS, and I work primarily with the ACS Publications Division. I handle all copyright-related matters, including, but not limited, to permissions (both granting and seeking permission), making certain that authors and their employers understand copyright transfer and signing the Journal Publishing Agreement, and providing support to all ACS journal editorial offices.
I am an attorney and received my JD from New York Law School. I have a BS in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Master’s in Journalism from Louisiana State University. I joined ACS in 2000, two years after completing law school, and after nearly 20 years working in radio broadcasting. In addition to my work at ACS, I am also an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University, where I teach a course in Copyright Law as part of the Master in Professional Studies program. I received GW’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010.
I am also a frequent speaker on copyright topics via various legal and publishing organizations.
Please feel free to ask me anything related to copyright law and ACS copyright policy. Please note, however, that I am not able to provide specific legal advice via this forum. If you do require legal advice, you should consult with your own copyright counsel.
I will be back at 11am EDT (8am PDT, 3pm UTC) to begin answering your questions.
