Hi reddit,
I’m Fred Gould, professor of entomology at North Carolina State University and the codirector of NCSU’s Center on Genetic Engineering and Society. I apply evolutionary biology and ecological genetics to the study of sustainable insect-pest management. I recently served as chair of the Academies committee that wrote the report on genetically engineered crops.
I’m Neal Stewart, a professor of plant sciences at the University of Tennessee and the codirector of the Tennessee Plant Research Center. My research spans plant biotechnology, synthetic biology, genomics, and ecology with an interest in understanding and manipulating systems relative to agricultural production and environmental function. I served on the Academies committee, and I’m also a singer and songwriter. We’re talking about the scientific evidence for claims about the benefits of and risked posed by genetically engineered crops and the prospects for these crops in the future.
We will be back at 1 pm ET to answer your questions, Ask us anything!
